A little practice works… I worked on this solo again for a couple hours yesterday and was able to get it up to speed. Still don’t have that “complete mastery” feeling in the hands yet but it will come.

Fwiw, I emailed Tim about the solo and confirmed it was indeed 100% improvised. This is fascinating to me as the the solo reminds me of an etude of sorts. So compact, logical, nothing wasted.

Most of all I’m looking forward to breaking down the ideas (which are really foreign to me) and learning how to use this language in my own improvising. Thanks Tim!

The Birth of Bebop: A Social and Musical History…

Just finished this book last week and wanted to give it a shout out… highly enjoyable read! Scott DeVeaux does an outstanding job of pulling together all the disparate factors (artistic, economic, social, societal, racial, etc.) in the creation of the “Bebop Era” in the mid-forties. The main narrative centers around Coleman Hawkins’ triumphs and travails as he moves from gifted soloist with Fletcher Henderson in the late-twenties and early thirties to his European “exile” through the rest of the decade, his bumpy tenure as big band leader in the early-forties and finally settling in as small group leader and early-bop musician enabler in ’44.

Many of the great characters make appearances; Dizzy, Bird, Pops, Monk, and many more, but some of the most memorable material comes from the first hand interviews Scott did with Howard McGhee. His insights alone concerning gigging in the southeastern US, his time in the Andy Kirk band, recording with Hawk and feuding with him over wages are worth picking the book up for. I must confess before I read the book I wasn’t aware of how volatile the job situations were for musicians of the time period. Just goes to show that some things never change!

For anyone who loves jazz history or has some curiosity concerning how the music industry was woven into the fabric of US cultural and economic happenings during the ’30s and ’40s – head on over to Amazon or march your behind over to your local library… you can fist-bump me later!

Just a quick upload of me practicing this solo I transcribed. You can download the transcription I did here. It’s the “channel” on a tune called “Thread” off of Tim Miller‘s album “Trio2″. I’ll upload more video with possibly some analysis and me playing it again as I get it under my fingers. Dig!

New single and new amp… JEDAMP V18

Happy New Year y’all! Here’s a new track that I hope you’ll enjoy called “V18”. It was created specifically to showcase the new JEDAMP V18 amplifier I got my hands on recently. It’s a killer little “18 watt Marshall-style” amp with a few new twists. I love it for it’s simplicity and it’s rich and warm tone.

The tune is a simple straight ahead rock tune that I recorded using only the bridge pickup of my Grosh Electrajet VT. I just plugged straight into the amp with no pedals. Cab was my Mojo 2×12 loaded with Scumback M75s. Mic’d with an SM57 into a Duet 1 and then into Logic. BAM!!!

I recorded this little ditty for my buddy Kyle Rhodes who was kind enough to let me hold onto his Colossus prototype for about a week. It’s a monster 4-channel tone machine- a veritable “colossus” if you will. Super fun amp and I got to get my “chunk, chunk” on!

Music for television…

A couple months ago I was working on some music for a TV pilot and I wasn’t touching the guitar at all- just using the computer. I really enjoy that kind of work sometimes and I feel really at home doing it. Anyway, I was going through some of those files today and I found this little piece that really had no chance of ever being used because it was way to, well… way too much…

I suppose I should give it a name but for now it shall remain “#8″. Dig!
